A NEW AND ALTERNATIVE MATERIAL IN NUCLEAR INDUSTRY: BENTONITE
Considering the increase in the number of nuclear power plants, the use of nuclear weapons in wars, the increase in the number of radiation-emitting medical devices and the increase in nuclear accidents, the importance of radiation protection measures is emerging. Nuclear Waste Management / Radioactive waste management and radiation protection are the three basic rules of time, distance and shielding. Nowadays, lead is generally used as an armor shield to protect against radiation in buildings. The lead has many negative effects on human health as well as having a radiation retention characteristic. In the literature, radiation shielding properties of heavy concrete used in barite have been examined and it is stated that it is more suitable than normal concrete. However, because of the high durability of heavy concretes, it is difficult to use especially in high-rise buildings and it is economically expensive. For these reasons, there is a need for the production of new types of protective materials that absorb the radiation beams and to improve their properties as much as possible in order to eliminate the harmful effects of harmful radiation emitted from the radiation sources used in different areas or to reduce them to acceptable harmless levels.
A study was conducted to eliminate the damage caused by the Tohoku earthquake in Japan in 2011 at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. In this study, the heavy bentonite-based slurry proved to have excellent performance as a filler for radiation protection during the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant.
